Carolina Cyber Network

The Spring 2024 Convening included representatives from 19 North Carolina colleges and universities and featured presentations by Maria Thompson, State and Local Government Executive Government Advisor for AWS; Jiri Jirik, Director of the Education Pathway National Center; LTC Randy Linneman, Chief Innovation Officer for the XVIII Airborne Corps, Dene Farrell, Chief Data Officer for the XVIII Airborne Corp; and LTC Robert Felicio, Chief Information Officer, NC National Guard. Highlights from the convening included:

  • Using her own story as a backdrop, Maria Thompson, discussed the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the power of embracing change.  Ms. Thompson encouraged the audience to be open to unconventional paths.
  • A panel discussion moderated by Ed Carroll of the Carolina Cyber Center at Montreat included Jason Kelley from the US Coast Guard, Eleanor Taylor from Idaho National Labs, and Pete Seeber from Vendetta Cyber Defense.  The panel focused on ways in which the CCN can connect with industry.
  • Jiri Jirik discussed the efforts of the EPNC to establish a national network of cybersecurity education to career pathways, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among educational institutions.  The EPNC has developed standardized curriculum content, assessment tools, lab activities, and virtual student skills competitions.
  • LTC Robert Felicio described the work of the NC National Guard Cyber Security Response Force (CSRF) in supporting state entities, restoring services, and responding effectively to cyber incidents.

The Fall Convening will be September 26-27 at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
